The 2012 FANB Basketball and Volleyball Sports Tournament organized by FANB Moncton Chapter held last October 7 and 14 was a great success. The events were attended by well over 400 Filipinos and non-Filipinos. Its success was attributed to the hard work and dedication of the FANB Moncton Board of Directors, members and volunteers.
The 2 day event was participated by teams from Campbellton, Deer Island, Fredericton, Saint John, Moncton and Shediac.
Day 1 of the event was held at the Centennial Park in Moncton. At the end of day 1, basketball and volleyball teams from Moncton moved to the finals as well as basketball and volleyball teams from Shediac, basketball team from Deer Island and basketball team from Fredericton-Saint John.
Day 2 of the event (finals) was held at the NBCC Moncton campus. Due to work schedule of the the Deer Island basketball team, they were not able to participate at the finals. The first game was a match between Moncton and Fredericton-Saint John basketball teams where Fredericton-Saint John team won the game and moved to finals. The second game was a match between Shediac and Shediac basketball teams. The winner of this match moved to finals. The third game was a match between Shediac and Moncton volleyball teams where Shediac won the game. The last game was a match between Shediac and Fredericton-Saint John basketball teams where Fredericton-Saint John team won the game.
At the closing ceremony, certificates, plaques, and prizes were awarded to the players as well as the volunteers. The first prize trophy for volleyball was awarded to Shediac team and the first prize trophy for basketball was awarded to Fredericton-Saint John basketball team. Melinda Steeves, Chair of FANB Moncton Chapter and the entire FANB Moncton Board of Directors gave thanks to all the FANB Chapters and their teams for joining the tournament and to the volunteers who worked so hard in making this event a huge success.
To my knowledge, this is the first Filipino Sports Tournament in New Brunswick and I am proud to say that Moncton is the birth of the first Filipino Sports Tournament in New Brunswick. This tournament brought us Filipinos together and gave us the chance to meet other Kababayans from other parts of the province. Everyone was appreciative, excited and cheering for their own teams. All enjoyed the games.
The tournament was the brain of Joel Sebastian with the help of the entire FANB Board Moncton Chapter and volunteers. Joel had organized similar tournaments for 8 years in Taiwan before migrating to Canada. I spoke with Joel about having a similar event next year and he is more than happy to work again and bring more games, bigger and better next year. So to all the Chapter teams, start practicing now and see you all next year. Visit our website more often for more news in the coming months about the tournament next year.
Mabuhay FANB Chapters!!!
